Buying and Installation

You can now buy the game on gog.com DRM free! It appears to be the “gold edition” including all add-ons, in German known as “Königsedition”.

If your PC still has an optical drive (CD/DVD), you can probably still get the CD version on ebay or amazon. However, the CD is required to play. If you use a crack, it won’t be able to load the music from the CD. (and the cracks do not really work)

Color bug

To fix the “color bug” (distorted graphics after minimizing the game or just in general on some computers), press the pause key on your keyboard twice (works even in the main menu).

Clicking “Multiplayer” to fix the color bug worked for me in the original version of the game,but not in the GoG version.

Crashes

Anno 1602 crashes quite often. From my experience it crashes mostly when video or sound events happen, but I did not play long enough without any sounds/music or video to see if it still crashes. What helped on older computers (XP) was to disable hardware sound acceleration in the Windows settings.

Even the GoG version crashed after playing for 3 hours. -> Save your game frequently, because Anno 1602 has no automated save feature!

Building layouts

Most islands in Anno 1602 are very small. Hence it is not easily possible to group buildings together in a very efficient way. Knowing how many fields each building requires to work at 100% efficiency is very useful,however.

Goods consumption

You can decode the .cod files in the game folder to get access to all(?) parameters of the game (in German). “Sir Henry” from http://annopool.de created an editor that lets you modify and save the files. Download codeditor_setup.exe

Anno 1602 calculates goods consumption every 10 seconds and always rounds down, which leads to rounding inaccuracies, which Charlie from annozone explained (in German). TL;DR: Goods consumption and tax income are a bit less than the .cod files say.
It is probably easiest to just watch which goods you are running out of, instead of doing the math.

Production and selling prices

• Food: Fishing huts are best, as they consume no space and are only a tiny bit more expensive per produced ton of food than the meat production chain. Bakery food is almost twice as expensive.
• Wool: Sheep produce wool for a third of the price of cotton plantations, but you need more space to produce the same amount.
• Iron ore: Because the regular/small iron mine exhausts after a maximum of 80 tons of produced iron ore, it might be an alternative to buy iron ore from the traders at up to ~$65, instead of producing your own at $43 per ton + construction costs. Traders sell iron ore as soon as the first iron mine has been built by a player. Mountains without snow on them only have small iron deposits in them [unconfirmed]. Big iron deposits are never exhausted when a deep iron mine is built.
• Most predefined selling prices (when you sell to traders without adjusting the price) are above the production price. The following goods have the biggest profit per ton (at standard price), sorted ascending from highest (from ~$375 to ~$3 profit per ton): Jewelry, gold, cannons, clothes, muskets, tools, bricks, cloth (made from sheep wool), wood, alcohol (sugar), food (hunting), wool (sheep), alcohol (wine), iron, food (fishing), spices, swords, sugar cane, wool (cotton), tobacco products, cloth (cotton).Goods that are unlikely to be sold (or purchased) in the late game are struck through.

Construction costs are not included and of course it is better to sell 100 goods A for $1 profit each instead of 5 goods B for $5 profit each. The “profit ranking” shows however, that is is a good idea to sell excess wood and bricks in the beginning of the game.

Trivia

• Gold: In endless games you should always save right at the beginning and explore all islands, in order to make sure that there is enough gold. Sometimes there is none. Two or three gold ore occurrences are the maximum from what I remember. You should also make sure that the mountains have enough space for gold mines (5 mines would be good).
• Soldiers: In theory a well mixed army is most efficient, as ranged units alone have no chance against a melee unit army that has the same upkeep costs. In reality the Infantrymen are useless (Cavalry costs more upkeep but is also better) and you just build Artillerymen and keep them somewhat close to your ships (the AI will run into your ship cannon fire), as every other unit deals very little damage to buildings. Furthermore, destroying the enemy fleet already wins you the game, as it stifles the enemy’s economy, and you don’t need to worry about enemy soldiers when they have no fleet.
• Towers are best put behind walls.
• You can take over an enemy’s destroyed warehouse and marketplaces by building your own ones on top of them.
• Clicking the enemy ship repeatedly while attacking will cause your ship to attack faster [unconfirmed].
• Walling in attacking soldiers with forest will lock them in (AI), or at least greatly hinder their attack (human).
• Ships: I am unsure if there is still a limit of 20 ships or 40. Regardless of that, it’s best to only build large war ships. You can possibly buy ships to have more than the ship limit (but the AI never really sells ships).
• When trading with native villages, it is best to only deliver one ton of cloth OR alcohol at a time, in order to get roughly 2 tons of tobacco/spices instead of 1.5 per ton of your goods. [unconfirmed]
• You can build a new statue after your at least “citizen” level citizens have been happy for 30 minutes (interrupted by loading game and pests/fire).
• You do not need firefighters when all your citizens have reached “citizen” level. [unconfirmed, but appears to be true]

Cheats

Press CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+W at the same time, then enter 2061 (1602 backwards) and confirm with ENTER.
Now you can do the following:
SHIFT+T -> +5t Tools
SHIFT+H -> +5t Wood
SHIFT+Z -> +5t Bricks
SHIFT+K -> +1t Cannons
SHIFT+M -> +5000(?) Money
You can also hit CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+W again, then insert a number between 02 and 24, confirm with ENTER, then hit A to gain 5 tons of a certain good (ship or warehouse must be selected).

Port forwarding

Anno 1602 uses the ports 2300-2400 (TCP + UDP) and 47624 (TCP).
